Not All Agencies Are Created Equal
The video editing agency market has exploded. A quick Google search returns hundreds of options — from one-person operations calling themselves "agencies" to massive offshore factories churning out generic edits.
How do you find the right partner? Here are the 9 questions that matter.
1. Do They Specialize in Your Niche?
A real estate video editor and a wedding video editor require completely different skills. An agency that specializes in your niche will understand your pacing requirements, style conventions, and delivery specs without you having to explain them.
Ask: "What percentage of your work is in my niche?" Green flag: "80% of our work is real estate / podcast / reels" (they specialize) Red flag: "We do everything" (they specialize in nothing)2. What Does Their Review Process Look Like?
Professional agencies use Frame.io or similar tools for time-stamped feedback. If they're asking you to describe changes over email or WhatsApp, that's a sign of an amateur operation.
Ask: "How do I provide feedback on edits?" Green flag: "We use Frame.io with time-stamped commenting" Red flag: "Just send us a WhatsApp message"3. Do You Get a Dedicated Editor?
Consistency comes from working with the same editor repeatedly. If the agency rotates random editors through your projects, your brand consistency will suffer.
Ask: "Will I have a dedicated editor?" Green flag: "Yes, you'll be assigned a primary editor who learns your style" Red flag: "Our editors are assigned based on availability"4. What's the Turnaround Time?
In 2026, 24–48 hours is the standard for most editing agencies. Anything longer than 72 hours for a standard project is a red flag.
Ask: "What's your guaranteed turnaround time?" Green flag: "24 hours for standard edits, 48 hours for complex projects" Red flag: "Depends on our workload" (no guaranteed timeline)5. How Do They Handle Revisions?
Unlimited revisions sounds great in theory. But what matters is how revisions are managed. A good agency welcomes feedback. A bad one makes you feel guilty for requesting changes.
Ask: "How many revisions are included, and how do you handle feedback?" Green flag: "Revisions are included. Use Frame.io to mark exact changes." Red flag: "Revisions are extra" or "We'll try to get it right the first time"6. What's Their Team Size?
A team of 1–2 people calling themselves an agency is a freelancer with a website. You need enough editors to handle your volume and enough PMs to ensure quality control.
Ask: "How many editors and project managers do you have?" Green flag: 10+ editors with dedicated project managers Red flag: "It's just me and my partner"7. Do They Have a Client Portal?
File management shouldn't involve Google Drive links and email attachments. Professional agencies have dedicated portals for file upload, tracking, and delivery.
Ask: "How do I upload footage and receive finished edits?" Green flag: "Through our secure client portal" Red flag: "Send it via Google Drive or WeTransfer"8. Can They Scale With You?
Your agency should be able to handle 5x your current volume without quality dropping. Ask about their capacity before you need it.
Ask: "If I need to double my output next month, can you handle it?" Green flag: "Absolutely — we're built for volume" Red flag: "We'd need to find additional editors"9. What Do Their Clients Say?
Testimonials on a website are curated. Ask for references you can actually contact. Or check Google Reviews, Trustpilot, or LinkedIn for unfiltered feedback.
Ask: "Can I speak with a current client in my niche?" Green flag: They immediately connect you with a reference Red flag: "We can't share client information"The Decision Framework
